In Tasmania, builder credentials are administered by Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS). Builders and building services providers hold licences that can be checked on the public register. For residential building work, home warranty insurance is a separate but critical check.
Before You Search: What a Tasmanian Builder Licence Tells You
Tasmania’s builder licensing is class/scope based. When verifying a builder, your objective is to confirm: (1) the correct licence holder, (2) current status, and (3) the class/scope fits your job. If you’re contracting with a company, confirm the company’s licence details (not just an individual on the quote).
Confirm the licence holder
Always match the register record to the legal entity signing your contract.
Confirm the contracting entity (legal name + ABN/ACN).
Search the CBOS register for the builder/company.
Confirm the licence is current and the class/scope suits the work.
Separate check: Home warranty insurance
Home warranty insurance is separate from licensing. Ask for the certificate and ensure it matches the contract.
Request the certificate of insurance in your name (where required).
Verify policy details and validity with the insurer (if in doubt).
Don’t treat insurance as a substitute for a correct licence class/scope.
Tip: If you can’t find the builder using a trading name, try the legal name or individual surname. Tasmania’s register is designed for current licence holders - expired/cancelled records may not display the same way.
Official Public Registers
Tasmania provides a public register for builders and other licensed occupations via CBOS. Disciplinary and dispute pathways sit separately (CBOS disciplinary process and TasCAT streams). Use the official sources below, or run the Builder Report for a consolidated summary.
Find a Licensed Tradesperson / Builder (CBOS Register Search)
Regulator: CBOS • Search current licence holders (includes builders and building services providers)
Use this tool to confirm name, licence type, and status. Start with the builder/company legal name. If needed, try surname or other identifiers.
Authority: Tasmanian Government legislation and consumer guidance
For residential building work, builders are generally required to provide a certificate of insurance for insurable work under the contract (timing and thresholds depend on the legislative framework and contract type). Always ask for evidence early, before paying deposits or allowing work to start.
If you have the insurer/policy number, you can often verify via the insurer’s certificate register or customer service line.
Disciplinary Process (CBOS)
Authority: CBOS • Disciplinary panels and outcomes process for licence holders
If there’s a serious issue, understand how matters can be assessed via disciplinary panels and the regulator process (separate from simple licence status checks).
TasCAT publishes how different licensing/disciplinary decisions can be reviewed or appealed in the Occupational & Disciplinary Stream (what can be brought, and under which legislation).
Authority: Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) • ABN Lookup
Confirm company registration, directors, and ABN details. Use ABN Lookup for a free quick check; use ASIC Connect for full company extracts (fee may apply). Licensing does not, by itself, indicate financial health.
Does the ABN/ACN on the quote match the registered entity?
Who are the current directors?
Are there related entities worth investigating?
Are any directors banned or disqualified from managing corporations or other specific activities?
Why Verification Takes Multiple Checks in Tasmania
The public register helps confirm whether a builder is currently licensed - but you still need to interpret licence class/scope for your job.
Residential home warranty insurance is separate and should be evidenced with a certificate (where required).
Disciplinary and dispute resolution pathways sit outside simple licence checks (CBOS process and TasCAT streams).
Corporate and insolvency risk signals sit outside CBOS licensing systems.
Consolidated Verification
The TrustSignal Builder Report consolidates Tasmanian licensing, class/scope cues, home warranty insurance guidance signals, and corporate context into a structured summary - helping you confirm: (1) who is licensed, (2) whether licence scope matches your job, and (3) whether insurance and corporate flags exist.
